A turbocharger is basically an air compressor. It takes in air and compresses it to increase your engines power. In some cases turbochargers can increase your gas mileage. This is because it will burn every last drop of gas where as a normal engine would leave behind small amounts. A turbocharger can be applied to any type of engine, rotary, diesel, or even 2 strong and 4 stroke, all while using what normally would have been expelled as exhaust.

When installing a turbocharger you remove your stock exhaust manifold and replace it with a turbo kit. The turbo takes all cylinders exhaust in to one area and forces it in the turbine housing. The exhaust is then re-routed out of the back of your turbo to exit your car.

The only limit to a car’s power is how much fuel you can deliver in to the engine and how well you can build an engine to handle the power.

The goal of a turbo kit is to make the car faster. It does this by increasing the amount of amount of air and fuel the car can burn. A turbo charger forces more air in to the cylinders, thus adding 6-8 PSI of extra pressure. On average this can lead to around 30-40% performance gain. The turbo charger is connected to the exhaust manifold. The turbine which is spun using exhaust is connected to the compressor, which sends pressurized air to the pistons. The more air and gas sent to them allows them to move more rapidly, and offers you a great speed advantage. However, there are some downsides. Running a turbo charger increases the risk of knocks.

Compressing air raises the temperature, which may or may not increase enough to ignore the fuel before the spark plug fires. Because of this, a car with a turbo kit will run better with higher octane fuels. Along with the obvious power advantages, a turbo kit will help your car in high altitude environments. Since the air is dense, engines can’t pack as much air in to the cylinder. Obviously since a turbo will force air in there, you will experience fewer difficulties.
