3 March 2008 - 17:40How To Powershift Your Ford Mustang

2010 Ford Mustang
Power shifting is a touchy subject among car enthusiasts. There are many debates on whether it helps your time, or just hurts your car. However, if done right power shifting can definitely improve your track time.
Power shifting is a method of changing gears while still keeping the RPMs high. This allows for a maximum power surge. A correctly done shift should chirp the tires. What differs a power shift from speed shifting or granny shifting is the acceleration. When power shifting, your foot should be be on the gas, pressing it to the floor the whole time. When the RPMs are at the correct spot on your car’s power curve, stomp the clutch and switch gears at the same time. You have to get the timing perfect in order for it to work. You should be pulling the shift knob up or down slightly depending on what gear you’re going in to, just to make the process faster.
Be careful when attempting this with high powered cars such as the Mustang. It’s definitely recommended to try on low powered cars. Shifting from gear three to four will be good for practice. Obviously this method of shifting causes extreme wear and tear on your transmission, so don’t do it all the time. In fact most people never recommend doing it unless you’re in a race.
